Strathclyde Police is looking to shed 600 civilian jobs but Chief Constable wants to ride around like a ‘drug dealer’ in new luxury Audi A6

Dear All

One of the things most ordinary people wouldn’t associate with the Police is an expenses and padded out contracts culture.

So, it must come as a surprise that Scotland’s largest police, Strathclyde Police is ordering new luxury cars for its chief constable and his deputy.

And not any old bangers but an Audi and a BMW!

So, let us pause an moment and ask what does Stephen House the Chief Constable and his deputy get in the way of a pay packet?

Stephen House gets £178,431 a year.

Deputy Richardson earns £139,119 a year.

Six figures salaries along with two finger arrogance.

Dave Watson, the Scottish organiser at the Unison trade union describes the decision as “absurd”.

People will lose their jobs as Strathclyde is proposed axing 600 civilian posts and hundreds of police officer jobs through voluntary redundancy and early retirement.

Watson is being kind, this is more like abuse in public office; the culture of entitlement in the quango sector at senior level is beyond a sick joke.

Watson said:

“It is absurd that senior police officers are getting new executive cars at the same time that allowances for low-paid police staff are being taken away.”

Green MSP Patrick Harvie said:

“These decisions are simply inexcusable and must be reversed.”

Rob Shorthouse, Strathclyde Police’s director of corporate communications paints this as matter of fact by saying:

“Access to a car is part of senior officers’ remuneration package.”

It is time that Strathclyde Police Authority (SPA) got a grip and ensures that new contracts are stripped of such perks in future.

At £178,431 a year, House can spend his own cash and buy an Audi A6.

The Convenor of Strathclyde Police Authority (SPA) is Glasgow Labour Councillor of shame Stephen Curran.

He knows cars as Strathclyde Police can testify to, they popped by to see what he and fellow Labour Councillor of shame Anne McTaggart were up to in a dark lane in Pollok Park one night.

That story got a lot of mileage!

This can't be the same Patrick who recently enjoyed a 14,000 mile 'trip of a lifetime' to the Americas can it ? Including £6,000 of hotel accommodation paid for by the US state dept ( according to his expenses). Nice
